Backend Lead at Grain

Shane Howley has a diverse and extensive work experience spanning multiple companies and roles. Shane is currently working as the Backend Lead at Grain since July 2020. Prior to this, they held a role as a Technical Advisor and Engineer at Genesis Block from June 2019 to June 2020.

Before that, Shane worked at Mainframe from August 2017 to June 2019 as a Principal Engineer, where they focused on developing the core technology for the Mainframe network, a privacy-focused decentralised communications network.

Shane also worked as a Senior Software Engineer at Mainframe from October 2015 to August 2017, where they played a crucial role in laying out the core architecture of the backend and contributed to client-side development of the legacy messaging product.

Prior to their work at Mainframe, Shane was a Lead Software Engineer at Upfront Analytics from April 2012 to September 2015. Here, they were responsible for architecting core services, DevOps, and mobile apps. Shane led the design and implementation of a scalable game server and also co-developed a mobile game and its engine.

Shane co-founded Radicle Design in October 2010, where they designed, consulted, and developed bespoke software solutions for various clients. Some of the notable projects include a fitness app for Android and a computer vision image tracking recognition for an iOS app.

During their time at Trinity College Dublin from October 2007 to October 2012, Shane conducted Ph.D. research and also served as a lecturer for CS4021 Advanced Computer Architecture in 2010 and 2011.

At Suura, as a Research and Development Engineer from December 2008 to November 2010, Shane initially worked as a mobile engineer before becoming part of the core research team. Shane played a key role in developing mobile versions of existing C++ client software for J2ME and Symbian platforms.

Shane Howley pursued a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Engineering degree in Electronic & Computer Engineering from Trinity College Dublin, studying from 2003 to 2007. Subsequently, they attended the same institution and earned a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Computer Science from 2007 to 2012.
