Rob Ireland's work experience includes various roles in the transportation industry. Rob worked as the Client Oversight for Greater Anglia Additional Services at the Department for Transport (DfT) starting in 2019. Prior to that, they were the Chief Projects Engineer at Greater Anglia since 2017. From 2003 to 2017, they held multiple roles at Network Rail, including Chief Control, Command and Signalling Engineer, Head of Control, Command and Signalling, Principal Policy Specialist, National Enhancement Projects Engineer, Lead of EU Signalling Benchmarking, Senior Maintenance Support Engineer, Project Manager, European Interface Engineer, and Graduate Engineer. Rob also worked as an Interface Engineer at Rail Link Engineering and as a Development Engineer at Rowe Hankins Ltd.

Rob Ireland completed their Masters in Electrical and Electronic Engineering with French at the University of Nottingham from 1998 to 2002. Rob then pursued a Post Graduate Certificate in Railway Systems Engineering and Integration at the University of Birmingham from 2018 to 2019. In 2013-2014, they obtained a Post Graduate Award in Organizational Leadership from the University of Warwick. Lastly, in 2000-2001, they participated in an ERASMUS program at Polytech Montpellier, though the field of study was not specified.
