Daryl Brook

Educational Success Partner at Greenfield Learning

Daryl joined the Greenfield team after having been a teacher and school principal for over 20 years in both California and Canada. For the entirety of his career, Daryl has been committed to equity and social justice education. This commitment informs his support of schools with the design and implementation of comprehensive literacy programs, especially for readers in the upper elementary and secondary grades. He lives in the Echo Park hills of Los Angeles and supports schools in Southern California and across Canada.

Daryl began his career in the elementary grades, gaining expertise in foundational literacy instruction while teaching grades one through three. Moving to upper elementary and middle school, he earned a Specialist Accreditation in Adolescent Literacy from York University and the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, in Toronto, Canada. He served as a Literacy and Numeracy lead teacher to the Ontario Focussed Intervention Program, as well as Adjunct Professor for York University’s Inner-city Education Programme.

Moving to Los Angeles, Daryl led schools in the implementation of best practices to meet the demands of the Common Core State Standards English Language Arts standards. After 7 years as a teacher leader, he completed his administrative credential at UCLA’s Principal Leadership Institute with a fieldwork inquiry into inequitable school assessment practices. As principal, he sought to improve his school’s culture of care through fairer assessment practices and better systems of support. A major component of this project was the redesign of the school’s intervention programming. His time as principal affirmed his core belief in the capacity of teachers, and helped him establish a career goal of becoming an exceptional coach of assessment, planning, and instruction.
