Francis J. Waller

Francis Waller, Ph.D. received his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Vermont, VT. This was followed by post-doctoral work in low-temperature kinetics and Assistant Professorships at St. Lawrence University, NY, and Simmons College, MA. Most of his professional career, however, was spent as an industrial chemist with E. I. duPont deNemours (1974-1988) in Wilmington, DE at its Experimental Station and Air Products (1988-2005) located in Trexler town, PA. During his industrial career, he was named on 46 U.S. patents and was the author or co-author of 70 scientific publications.

In addition to research responsibilities, he continued teaching as an Adjunct Professor at Lehigh University. From 2006 to 2013, he taught a 1-day short course on intellectual property for the American Chemical Society at their national meetings. He converted this 1-day short course into a book published by Wiley: Writing Chemistry Patents and Intellectual Property: A Practical Guide, © 2011. A second co-authored book, published by Lexis Nexis, was developed for patent attorneys: Chemistry for Patent Attorneys, © 2014.

Dr. Waller has been the recipient of several science-related awards. In 1992, he received the Catalysis Club of Philadelphia Award. He was inducted into the Discovery Center’s Science Hall of Fame in 1999 and in 2001 received the Paul Rylander Award from the Organic Reactions Catalysis Society.
