Philip Root

Chief Technology Officer

Philip Root currently serves as the Chief Technology Officer for GRVTY and as a Council Member for the Council on Global Competition and Innovation (CGCI), which focuses on advancing GCI investments. Additionally, Root is the founder of Lunar Pacific and has held significant roles at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) from May 2017 to July 2025, including Director of the Strategic Technology Office and acting Director of the Defense Sciences Office. Prior experience includes a tenure at the US Army where Root directed the Center for Innovation and Engineering and served in various capacities, including assistant professor and program manager. Root holds a PhD in Aerospace, Aeronautical and Astronautical/Space Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, along with a master’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the same institution and a bachelor's degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the United States Military Academy at West Point.
