Emily Billings has a long and varied work experience. Emily began their career in 2003 as a Certified Nursing Assistant in Dr. Ellen Kochman's Office of Internal Medicine. In 2008, they became an Undergraduate Research Assistant at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Emily then moved to the University of Virginia in 2009 to pursue a PhD in Microbiology. In 2015, they returned to Gryphon Scientific LLC as an Intern, and in 2016 they were promoted to Senior Analyst.

Emily Billings attended the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign from 2005 to 2009, where they earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Integrative Biology with minors in Chemistry and Spanish. Emily then attended the University of Virginia from 2009 to 2011, where they earned a Master of Science degree in Biological and Physical Sciences. Emily continued their studies at the University of Virginia until 2016, where they earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Microbiology and Immunology.
