Katherine Herring Capps

Katherine “Katie” Herring Capps, is co-founder, executive director and board member of the Washington-based Get the Medications Right Institute (GTMRx) and founder and president of Health2 Resources, a national health care project management and consulting firm practicing in the Washington area for nearly 23 years.

At GTMRx, Capps collaborates with fellow board members to develop and execute the Institute’s strategy, bringing together critical stakeholders to focus on the appropriate use of medications and gene therapies. Launched in 2019, the organization has grown to 1,600 members from over 1,000 organizations in 49 states. Members are bound together by the urgent need to optimize outcomes and reduce the total cost of care by getting the medications right.

A gifted communicator, manager, and coalition builder, she cultivates relationships with stakeholders across the health care and health policy spectrums.

Capps has a long history of collaboration in multi-stakeholder environments. As Health2 Resources’ founder and president, she and her team have helped clients meet advocacy, policy, outreach, awareness, and business goals since 1998. In that capacity, she was instrumental in the launch of the key advocacy organizations, including the Patient-Centered Primary Care Collaborative (now PCC) and the eHealth Initiative.

Prior to establishing Health2 Resources, Capps served as president of the Alabama Healthcare Council, a CEO-governed business coalition focused on health care cost, quality, and affordability. It used advocacy, measurement, and group contracting to decrease costs and increase the quality of care, access, and accountability. She successfully negotiated a multi-year, statewide value-based purchasing contract with the state’s largest health plan.

Before that, Capps served for 12 years as a hospital administrator at both for-profit and not-for-profit health care systems located in metro and rural markets in Florida and Alabama. She also served as executive director of a seven-county Medicare-certified home care agency focused on underserved populations in rural communities.

A noted health policy expert, she is frequently invited to write and speak on topics such as value-based purchasing, comprehensive medication management, driving quality and accountability, person-centered care, market-based health reform, and the importance of advanced primary care.

She has served as a board member for the National Business Coalition on Health (NBCH), Washington Adventist Health Foundation, the Institute for Health and Productivity Management, and the Healthcare Industry Access Initiative. She was also an early member of the purchaser committee for the National Committee for Quality Assurance and the National Advisory Board of NBCH.

Capps and her husband, John, are members of the Order of St John, a global humanitarian charity. The US arm supports the St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital and, through its volunteer corps, the social and health care needs of communities throughout the US.

Katie and John are proud parents of John-Eric Harper Capps, and they live (with their Schnauzer) in Northern Virginia.
