Elizabeth Hartwell

Chief Medical Officer at Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center

Elizabeth Hartwell has had a distinguished career in the medical field. Elizabeth started their work experience as the Chief of Clinical Pathology at the UT Medical School at Houston's Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine in 1991. Elizabeth then moved on to become the Medical Director at the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center in 2005. From 2016 to 2021, they held the position of Associate Medical Director at CHI St. Luke's Health - Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center. Currently, Elizabeth Hartwell serves as the Chief Medical Officer at Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, starting in 2023.

Elizabeth Hartwell has a diverse education history. Elizabeth completed their Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Anthropology from New Mexico State University from 1972 to 1975. Elizabeth then pursued a Medical Doctor degree at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston from 1982 to 1987. Following this, they completed a Pathology Residency with a specialization in Clinical Pathology, Blood Banking & Transfusion Medicine at the same institution from 1987 to 1991. Additionally, they obtained certification in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine from the American Board of Pathology in 1995.

Our mission: To partner with the community to help save and sustain lives by providing a safe supply of blood, blood components and related services. Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center began operations, independent of the Harris County Medical Society on Jan. 1, 1975. Today, recognized worldwide for its quality assurance programming, state-of-the-art technologies and management expertise, The Blood Center has grown to more than 700 employees and serves more than 170 hospitals and health care institutions in the 26-county Texas Gulf Coast, Brazos Valley and East Texas regions. To meet the needs of the area community, The Blood Center must collect about 1,000 donations every day. That is why The Blood Center encourages individuals to Commit for Life, a partnership between the community and Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center that is focused on saving lives, today and in the future. Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center is a nonprofit, independent blood center that is not affiliated with the American Red Cross.
