CJ Malcolm has extensive experience in emergency services, starting with their role as an Ocean Lifeguard for the City of San Diego in 2005. They also worked as an Ocean Lifeguard for the Imperial Beach Lifeguard Service from 1998 to 2008. In 2007, CJ Malcolm became a Paramedic with American Medical Response. They then went on to work as a Ranger Paramedic and Snow Ranger at Grand Teton National Park from 2009 to 2010. From 2010 to 2016, they served as the Preventive Search and Rescue Program Manager and Flight & Ground Paramedic at the Grand Canyon National Park. Since 2015, CJ Malcolm has been working as the Chief of Emergency Services at Gunnison Valley Health, responsible for providing critical care in a three-county area of Colorado. Additionally, CJ Malcolm worked as a Ski Patrol member at Mammoth Mountain in 1998.

CJ Malcolm completed a Master's of Organizational Leadership degree at Biola University from 2008 to 2012. Prior to that, they obtained a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of San Diego from 2002 to 2005. They also hold a Certificate of Paramedicine from Southwestern College, which was earned from 2005 to 2006. In addition, they attended Colorado Northwestern Community College for the Law Enforcement Ranger Academy, specializing in Type II Law Enforcement Commission - Park Service, starting in 2009.

CJ Malcolm has obtained several certifications, including the National Registered Paramedic (NRP) from the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians in March 2019, the Pediatric Neonatal Critical Care Transport (PNCCT) from UMBC in 2019, and the Flight Paramedic Certification (FP-C) from the International Association of Flight and Critical Care Paramedics in 2017.
