Laura Moreno Vela currently serves as the Volunteer and Participation Manager at the Hackney Migrant Centre since February 2023, after previously holding the position of Youth Participation Officer at the Mayor's Fund for London. Laura has extensive experience in community integration initiatives, including developing English lessons for refugees and coordinating projects for the integration of Syrian and Afghan women. Laura's earlier roles include volunteering with the Gaziantep Eğitim ve Gençlik Derneği NGO and participating as an Interreg Volunteer Youth at the Association of European Border Regions, where contributions focused on enhancing the employability of young creatives. Additionally, Laura was involved in student governance and activities at the University of Groningen, holding the positions of Treasurer and Secretary for the Study Association Clio. Laura holds an MSc in Migration, Mobility and Development from SOAS University of London and a degree in International Relations and International Organization from the University of Groningen.

Hackney Migrant Centre (HMC) delivers a free, weekly advice and support service for vulnerable migrants on immigration, housing, welfare and access to health (our visitors). We support visitors to resolve their immigration problems and move out of homelessness and destitution in the long-term, as well as assisting them to address immediate issues. Most of our visitors lack secure immigration status or have a pending asylum claim and are destitute as a result of their immigration status and the Hostile Environment.
