Laurence Wattrus

Co-Founder & Head of Program Mangement at Hammerhead

Laurence Wattrus has a diverse work experience spanning various industries and roles. In 2013, they co-founded Hammerhead Navigation Inc. and served as the Head of Program Management. Laurence successfully crowdfunded the Hammerhead One and secured a seed round from the Techstars / R/GA IOT accelerator. Laurence also worked at Techstars as a Hammerhead Co-Founder from November 2013 to March 2014. Prior to that, they worked as a Mechanical Engineering Intern at Emcore in 2012, where they focused on product R&D, design improvements, and qualification testing. In 2011, they served as an Engineering Intern at Bourns, where they were responsible for product design, manufacturing optimization, and competitor analysis. Before these experiences, Laurence worked as a Photographer from 2006 to 2011, and as an Engineering Intern at Honeywell in 2010, focusing on energy efficiency and market expansion. Laurence also had internships at Conbrako in 2008 and DCD Dorbyl in 2007, where they gained experience in engineering and welding.

Laurence Wattrus began their education at St. John's College in Johannesburg, South Africa, where they obtained an IEB Matriculant degree in 2006. Subsequently, they attended the University of Cape Town from 2007 to 2011, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Electro-Mechanical Engineering with a specialization in Mechanical Engineering. Laurence then pursued further education at Brown University from 2012 to 2013, where they completed a Master of Science degree in Engineering. At Brown University, they were enrolled in the PRIME program, which focuses on Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship. In the same year, Laurence also took extension courses at UCLA without obtaining a specific degree. Additionally, Laurence holds certification as an Engineer-In-Training, received from the Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists.
