Derek Darnell

Derek Darnell has a diverse range of work experience in various roles and organizations. Derek currently serves as the Director of Communications for Harris County Precinct One Commissioner Rodney Ellis. Prior to that, they were a Public Affairs Advisor for Harris County from 2019 to 2022. Darnell also worked for the Texas Senate as a Deputy Chief of Staff, overseeing office communications and managing daily activities of employees. Derek served as the Campaign Manager for Sylvia Garcia for Congress, where they coordinated campaign operations and achieved a significant win. Darnell also held positions as District Director and Legislative Aide in the Texas Senate, managing district offices and organizing various events. Derek has experience in political campaigns as well, working as a Regional Field Director and Field Director for different campaigns. Additionally, they served as the Community Outreach Director for the San Jacinto River Coalition, managing canvass efforts and engaging the community in the cleanup project. Darnell started their career as a Community Organizer for Texans Together Education Fund, facilitating dialogue between residents and elected officials and organizing support for legislative bills.

Derek Darnell has pursued higher education in Strategic Communication and Political Science and Government. From 2019 to 2024, they attended Texas Tech University to obtain a Master's degree in Strategic Communication. Prior to that, Derek completed their Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Government from the University of Houston, which they attended from 2005 to 2008.

In addition to their formal education, Derek has also obtained certifications in Social Media and Content Marketing from HubSpot. Derek acquired the Social Media certification in May 2020 and the Content Marketing certification in March 2020.
