John Hawkins has a diverse work experience that spans from 1985 to 2002. John started their career at Chick-fil-A, working as a cook and cashier, and eventually became an assistant manager. John then worked as a security associate at Belk, where they made numerous arrests and recovered stolen goods. In 1994, they served as a law clerk to a Circuit Court Judge, handling criminal and civil cases. From 1995 to 1996, they worked as a law clerk at the South Carolina Supreme Court, drafting opinions and advising on cases. John then joined Lister, Couch, and Courtney as an associate before becoming a partner at Lister and Hawkins in 1998. In 1996, they also served as a State Representative in the South Carolina House of Representatives, advocating for privacy rights and fiscal responsibility. In 2000, they became a State Senator and represented over 80,000 people in Spartanburg County. In 2002, they founded their own law firm, HawkLaw, where they currently work as the owner. Additionally, throughout their career, they served in the South Carolina Army National Guard, retiring as a Major in the JAG Corps after 23 years of service.

John Hawkins attended Dorman High School from 1982 to 1986, where they received their High School Diploma. John then furthered their education at Wofford College, from 1987 to 1991, earning a Bachelor's degree in English. After that, they attended Mississippi College School of Law from 1991 to 1992, but did not obtain a degree from this institution. Finally, from 1992 to 1994, John Hawkins attended the University of South Carolina School of Law, where they earned a Doctor of Law (J.D.) degree.
