Julie MacDonell has a diverse work experience spanning from 2007 to present. In 2007, they were an Articling Fellow at the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, where they contributed to legal research and writing, civil liberties advocacy, and public legal education. From 2008 to 2009, they were an Associate Lawyer at Kate Henderson Entertainment and Intellectual Property Law and Olthuis, Kleer, Townshend LLP. In 2008, they also founded Julie MacDonell Law, where they served as Principal and Senior Entertainment & Media Lawyer and Trademark Agent. Here, they provided external 'in-house' IP support to North American brands, focusing on trademark law, including clearing, obtaining and protecting trademark rights, the strategic management and enforcement of national and international trademark portfolios, intellectual property enforcement, and negotiating and drafting license and consent agreements. In 2012, they became a Founding Partner and Senior IP Lawyer at The Trademark Group, where they were a Registered Trademark Agent in Canada & US. Finally, in 2019, they became the Co-founder and CEO of Haloo, an instant deep trademark search, fail-safe trademark applications, and automated brand enforcement service for SMBs.
Julie MacDonell has a diverse education history. Julie obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) in Image Arts: Film Studies from Ryerson University between 1996 and 2000. Julie then went on to obtain a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from the University of Windsor between 2004 and 2007. Finally, they obtained a Master of Laws - LLM (coursework) from the University of Toronto Faculty of Law in 2008. Additionally, they have obtained certifications from the USPTO, IPIC, CIPO, and the Law Society of Ontario.
