Paul van Hagen has a significant amount of work experience in the engineering field. Starting in 1989, they worked as an Engineer at Costain for a year. From 1992 to 1994, they were an Engineer at Bettigole Andrews and Clark. Paul then moved on to Berger Lehman Associates, where they worked as a Structural Engineer from 1994 to 1997. Following that, they joined HNTB as a Project Engineer from 1997 to 2001. Continuing their career, they worked as a Project Manager at HDR from 2001 to 2016. In 2016, they became the Chief Engineer at Atkins, where they stayed until 2020. From 2020 to 2022, they were a Senior Technical Director at Arcadis. Currently, they hold the position of Principal Bridge Engineer at Hardesty & Hanover, LLC, which they began in February 2022.

Paul van Hagen pursued their education at Kingston University from 1988 to 1991, where they obtained a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) degree in Structural Engineering. Prior to that, they attended The Hayling School from 1977 to 1981, although no specific degree or field of study information is available for this period.

In addition to their formal education, Paul van Hagen has also obtained several certifications. In December 2017, they received the CEng MICE certification from the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). Earlier, in February 2010, they obtained the Professional Engineer (FL) certification from the Florida Board of Professional Engineers. Furthermore, in August 1998, Paul van Hagen obtained the Professional Engineer (NY) certification from the New York State Education Department.
