Tom Smithey has a diverse work experience spanning several decades. Tom began their career in 1988 as a Building Systems Engineer at UNC - Greensboro, where they worked until 1994. Tom then joined Brooks General Contractors as a Construction Operations Manager and Safety Manager, before moving on to HICAPS, Inc in 1999. At HICAPS, Tom held various positions including Vice President Program Management and Senior Project Manager. During their time there, they served as a Program Manager and was licensed as a General Contractor Qualifier in multiple states. Tom also acquired certifications as a Senior Certified Electronics Technician, R-56 Site Inspector, LEED-AP, and Risk Manager (ALCM). Additionally, Tom fulfilled responsibilities such as managing special projects, maintaining long-term client relationships, mentoring and training, and conducting investigations related to lightning strikes and TVSS damage. Most recently, they have retired but continues to work as a part-time consultant.
Tom Smithey, AIC, CPC, LEED-AP, SET-CSIA, ALCM has a strong education background in the field of construction, risk management, and loss control. Tom obtained an Associate Degree in Loss Control/Risk Management from the Insurance Institute of America, studying there from 1984 to 1988. Prior to that, they attended Virginia Tech from 1978 to 1982, earning a BS in Building Construction. Additionally, Tom also pursued a Bachelors in Construction Management at VirginiaTech, although the specific dates of this degree are not provided.
