Shelley Hwang

Clinical Advisor Breast Surgery at Higgs Boson

Dr. Shelley Hwang is the Mary and Deryl Hart Endowed Professor of Surgery, Professor of Radiology, Vice Chair of Research for the Duke Department of Surgery, and co-leader of the Women's Cancer Program at the Duke Cancer Institute. Her national leadership roles include membership on the NCI Breast Cancer Steering Committee and the NCCN Screening Guidelines Committee. Her career has been committed to improving outcomes and quality of life for patients with breast cancer.

Dr. Hwang's research interests include breast cancer prevention, identifying less invasive treatments for early-stage breast cancers, and understanding the genetic and stromal determinants of cancer progression. Dr. Hwang has an extensive track record in leading large multidisciplinary teams in both clinical care and research. She is coPI of the international CRUK PRECISION Grand Challenge project on early-stage breast cancer, and she leads the multi-site NCI Precancer Atlas project which is part of the Human Tumor Atlas Network.

Dr. Hwang is one of the top funded surgeon-scientists in the country and was named one of TIME magazine's Top 100 in 2016 for her work in refining treatment for patients with the earliest stages of breast cancer.
