Joseph Nicholas has a diverse work experience in the medical field. Starting in 2014, they worked as the Medical Director at The Highlands at Brighton until 2022. In 2014, they also became the Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Rochester Medical Center. In 2016, they additionally took on the role of Associate Program Director for the Med Peds Residency until June 2023. Prior to these positions, in 2005, they became an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. Most recently, in 2022, they started working as the Director of Medical Education and Associate Chief of Medicine at Highland Hospital of Rochester NY.

Joseph Nicholas has a comprehensive education history. Joseph began their academic journey in 1988 at Cornell University, where they pursued a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Neurobiology and Behavior. After completing their undergraduate studies in 1992, they enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, where they earned their Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree during their five-year tenure from 1992 to 1997. Following their medical training, Joseph Nicholas attended the University of Rochester from 1997 to 2001, undertaking a residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. Joseph further expanded their knowledge and expertise by joining the University at Albany, SUNY, from 2003 to 2005, where they completed a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree in the Public Health and General Preventive Medicine Residency Program.
