Staff Attorney at Hiscock Legal Aid Society

Leita Powers is a Staff Attorney at Hiscock Legal Aid Society, beginning in September 2023. Previously, Leita served as a Judicial Law Clerk for the U.S. Courts of Appeals from September 2022 to August 2023. Leita has teaching experience as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at Syracuse University College of Law, where responsibilities included instructing undergraduate students in "Law in the Liberal Arts" and supporting writing development. Additional legal research experience includes working as a Legal Research Assistant under Professor Barnes and being involved with the Southern Poverty Law Center as an Economic Justice Legal Intern. Leita has a strong background in advocacy, having worked with the Advocacy Center of Tompkins County and the Sexual Assault Resource Center. Educational qualifications include a Doctor of Law (JD) from Syracuse University College of Law and a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Women's Studies from Elmira College.

Hiscock Legal Aid Society

At Hiscock Legal Aid Society (HLA), we are dedicated to the principle that no one in Onondaga County shall be denied justice because of a lack of means. HLA, founded in 1949, promotes the fundamental right of every person to equal justice under the law. We provide high quality legal assistance to individuals and families in Onondaga County and the surrounding region. Our practice areas cover a variety of immigration matters, mandated family court cases, divorce, domestic violence, housing, unemployment, appeals, parole revocation, and extradition. We work collaboratively with other legal assistance and human service providers to develop innovative ways to provide needed services to the maximum number of people in our community. In the last 18 months, we’ve handled more than 10,000 cases and impacted more than 14,000 people.
