Tshilidzi Marwala serves as the 7th Rector of the United Nations University and Under-Secretary-General at the United Nations, both positions held since March 2023. Previously, Marwala was Vice Chancellor and Principal at the University of Johannesburg from January 2009 to February 2023, also serving as Vice Chancellor Designate, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research, and Executive Dean of the Faculty of Engineering & the Built Environment. Additional roles include Board Trustee at the Nelson Mandela Foundation and positions at the University of the Witwatersrand, where Marwala held titles such as SARChI Chair of System Engineering and Full Professor. Early career experiences include an Executive position at SABMiller and a Postdoctoral Research Associate role at Imperial College. Marwala obtained a PhD in Engineering with a focus on Artificial Intelligence from the University of Cambridge and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University.
