John Watson

Director, Operations Support at HOOPP

John Watson has a diverse work experience in various positions within the pension and healthcare industry. John started their career as a Supervisor in the Health Records Department at The Hospital for Sick Children. John then moved on to roles at OMERS, where they worked as a Supervisor and later took on acting manager roles, overseeing the administration of a defined benefit pension plan.

Afterwards, John worked at Fidelity Investments as a Manager, responsible for managing the calculations team for a defined benefit pension plan. John also supervised staff in remote locations.

John then joined the Ontario Pension Board as a Director, where they initially focused on developing training programs for the Client Services area. John was later promoted to oversee the entire Client Services and Support operations.

Following their tenure at the Ontario Pension Board, John joined the Multi-Sector Non Profit Benefit Plan Administrators as a Benefits Manager. Here, they were responsible for administering national target benefit multi-employer plans and ensuring members were serviced according to standards set by the Board and pension benefit rules. John also made presentations to member groups across Canada.

John later joined the Alberta Pensions Services Corporation (APS) as an Executive Director, with various roles including Strategic Initiatives, Client Operations, and Plan Operations. John was tasked with bringing change management, strategic alignment, and system strengthening to APS. John also played a leadership role in the Next Generation project, a system and organizational redevelopment program.

Most recently, John worked at HOOPP (Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan) as a Director of Operations Support. In this role, they led a team responsible for the operational/calculation portion of pension payroll, complex data investigation and changes, complex calculation support, imaging, and print functionality.

Throughout their career, John has demonstrated leadership, change management, and operational expertise in the pension and healthcare industry.

John Watson attended the University of Guelph from 1984 to 1989, where they earned a B.A. in Psychology. John then went on to enroll at Humber College from 1999 to 2001, where they pursued a degree in Pension Administration, known as PPAC. Lastly, from 2015 to 2016, John Watson attended the University of Fredericton and completed an eMBA (Executive Master of Business Administration) with a focus on Global Leadership.
