Mitchell Fogel

Senior Medical Director, Provider Transformation And National Accounts at Horizon Healthcare Services of New Jersey

Mitchell Fogel has a wealth of experience in the healthcare industry, starting with their role as a Research Associate at Boston University School of Medicine from 1988 to 1990. Mitchell then served as a Nephrologist and Vice President at Nephrology Associates, PC from 1990 to 2010, spearheading the use of advanced practice registered nurses and expanding the provider base.

In 1992, Fogel joined DaVita as a Medical Director, introducing team-based care and quality metrics. Mitchell oversaw the expansion of outpatient and acute dialysis facilities in multiple hospitals. Fogel continued their career at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport, CT, where they chaired the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, resulting in a reduction in pharmaceutical spending.

Fogel later joined St. Vincent's Medical Center as Vice President, Chief Academic Officer, and Chair of the Department of Medicine from 2010 to 2016. During their tenure, they championed safety culture and achieved reductions in serious safety events. Mitchell also revitalized the palliative care program and introduced community practice training, which led to an increase in primary care graduates.

Fogel then served as Chair of the Department of Medicine at Quinnipiac University School of Medicine from 2011 to 2016, followed by a role as Chief Medical Officer, Chair of Medicine, and Senior Vice President at Richmond University Medical Center from 2017 to 2020. During this time, they implemented various initiatives, including safety huddles, stroke thrombolysis program, and care coordination improvements.

Currently, Fogel holds the position of Senior Medical Director of Provider Transformation and National Accounts at Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, starting in 2021.

Mitchell Fogel completed their Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering from Vanderbilt University from 1975 to 1978. Mitchell then pursued a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree at the University of Pennsylvania from 1978 to 1982. Following that, they completed an Internal Medicine Residency Program at University Hospital, Boston from 1982 to 1985. Mitchell later pursued a Fellowship in Nephrology at Boston Medical Center from 1985 to 1988. Mitchell has additional certifications including being a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, obtaining the Diplomat in Nephrology from the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1988, obtaining the Diplomat in Internal Medicine in 1986 from the same institution, and being a Certified Physician Executive from the American College of Physician Executives (ACPE) in 2013.
