Heather Coats

Director Of Research at Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association

Heather Coats has a diverse work experience in the field of nursing and research. Heather started their career in 2009 as a clinical faculty at the University of Mississippi Medical Center and worked there until 2016. In 2014, they also served as an F31 Pre-Doctoral Fellow at NIH/NINR. Heather then joined the University of Washington/Cambia Palliative Care Center of Excellence in 2015 and worked as a Senior Fellow Trainee until 2017. During this time, they also became an Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado College of Nursing in 2017. Additionally, they were awarded the NIH/NINR K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Award in 2017 and started working as an Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado, Anschutz Medical Campus. Most recently, in 2020, they took on the role of Director of Research at the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association.

Heather Coats has a strong educational background in nursing. Heather pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Registered Nursing/Registered Nurse from the University of Arkansas, from 1992 to 1996. Afterward, they went on to earn a Master of Science degree in Adult Nurse Practitioner from the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus between 2003 and 2006. Heather continued their education and obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing from the University of Arizona, beginning in 2010 and graduating in 2015.
