Clayton S. Rose

Chair at Howard Hughes Medical Institute

Clayton S. Rose became the fifteenth president of Bowdoin College in July 2015. Prior to this, he was a professor of management practice at the Harvard Business School, where he focused on managerial responsibility, ethics, and the role of business in society. Before joining the HBS faculty, Rose was a senior executive at J.P. Morgan. He is also a member of the board of directors of Bank of America.

Rose earned both his undergraduate degree and MBA at the University of Chicago. After a twenty-year leadership and management career in finance he earned a PhD with distinction in sociology from the University of Pennsylvania.

Rose was elected a trustee of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in 2009 and became Chair in 2020.
