Detlef Weigel

Detlef Weigel is a prominent figure in the field of molecular biology and genetics, currently serving as a Member of the Medical Advisory Board at Howard Hughes Medical Institute since July 2020. As a co-founder of Computomics GmbH & Co. KG since May 2012 and CeMeT GmbH from July 2014 to September 2018, Weigel has contributed significantly to biotechnology ventures. From May 2001 onward, Weigel has held the position of Director of the Department of Molecular Biology at the Max Planck Institute for Biology Tübingen, after serving as Executive Director at the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology until December 2021. Weigel's academic journey includes notable roles as Assistant and Associate Professor at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies (1993 - 2002) and postdoctoral research at the California Institute of Technology (1989 - 1993). Educational qualifications include a postdoctoral degree in Plant Genetics from Caltech and a Ph.D. in Genetics from the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology, supplemented by a Diploma in Biology from the University of Cologne and earlier studies at Bielefeld University.
