Stephan Preibisch

Director Of Scientific Computing Software at Howard Hughes Medical Institute

Stephan Preibisch has extensive work experience in scientific computing software and research group leadership. Stephan is currently the Director of Scientific Computing Software at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, where they have been working since 2019. Prior to this role, they were a Team Leader at the same institute from 2019 to 2021.

Before joining the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Preibisch worked as a Research Group Leader at the Max Delbrück Center from 2015 to 2021. In this role, they combined microscopy, sequencing, computer vision, and software development to study and model transcriptional regulation in development using various model organisms.

From 2012 to 2015, Preibisch was an HFSP Fellow at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where they focused on understanding the development of C. elegans through computational and genetic tools.

Preibisch also has experience as a Bioinformatics Specialist at the HHMI Janelia Farm Research Campus from 2011 to 2012.

Earlier in their career, they served as a Postdoc and PhD Student at MPI-CBG from 2006 to 2011, where they developed image processing tools for reconstructing four-dimensional datasets of developing Drosophila embryos. Stephan also contributed to the development of ImgLib, a generic image processing library for Java.

Preibisch's work experience also includes a brief stint as a Visiting Scientist at the Stanford Research Institute in 2007 and prior work as a Student at the Interdisciplinary Center for Bioinformatics from 2002 to 2006.

Stephan Preibisch obtained their Diploma (Master of Science equivalent) in Computer Science from Technische Universität Dresden in the period from 2000 to 2006. Following this, they pursued a Ph.D. in Computer Science and Biology at Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics, completing it from 2006 to 2010.
