How you’ll contribute to the team:
As a Fabrication Apprentice, you will be enrolled in and participate in Howe’s state-registered apprenticeship program, T.E.K. (Technology, Experience, and Knowledge). Under the direction of the Foreman, you will assist in the daily processes and procedures of working in a sheet metal fabrication shop. You will perform tasks such as forming sheet metal fittings on brakes, work with a plasma cutting machine, and operate other sheet metal equipment such as shears and manual rollers. You will also participate in a monthly Howe-facilitated classroom training where will learn how to read and understand blueprints, troubleshoot and resolve issues, and carry out additional assignments as directed. Apprentices also will learn the importance of maintaining their tools, meeting completion deadlines, repairing equipment, and keeping their work areas neat, clean, and free of debris.
What you’ll bring to the table:
To be successful in Howe’s T.E.K. apprenticeship, you’ll need to be mechanically inclined and able to follow directions closely. Good communication skills are key, as well as the ability to work unsupervised, and maintain a professional appearance always.
How you’ll qualify:
Howe’s T.E.K. apprenticeship provides all the on-the-job and classroom training necessary to qualify you to become licensed in your traded. No prior fabrication experience is required, but it is preferred. Apprentices must also demonstrate basic skills and knowledge of the trade, as well as a good understanding of materials and tools used in the industry. At a minimum, a high school diploma or equivalent is required.
What to expect in the shop:
Working in the sheet metal fabrication industry can be physically demanding. As a Fabrication Apprentice, you must have the physical strength to lift/carry/push/pull up to 50lbs, and have the balance, hand-eye coordination, and stamina necessary to complete jobs in various areas. Apprentices must also be able to frequently twist, turn, and operate equipment while standing for extended periods of time.
