Fire Protection Apprentice

Sioux Falls, United States

Job description

Compensation & Incentives:

  • $20.00-$25.00 per hour depending on experience and qualifications.
  • $500 Apprentice Hand-Tool Kit on Day 1.
  • Up to $2,500 worth of cordless power tools in 1st year.
  • Tool allowance program
  • Discount on work boots.

How you’ll contribute to the team:

As an apprentice, you will be enrolled in and participate in Howe’s state-registered apprenticeship program, T.E.K. (Technology, Experience, and Knowledge). Under the direction of the Foreman, you will assist in the preparation, fabrication, and installation of fire sprinkler systems according to plans and codes. Each day and every job-site may be different, as you navigate cutting and carrying pipes, fittings, and installation equipment. You will participate in a monthly Howe-facilitated classroom training where apprentices learn how to conduct pressure tests, size systems, install vales and flow switches, and read blueprints. Apprentices will learn the importance of maintaining their tools, repairing equipment, and keeping their work areas neat, clean and free of debris, while carrying out additional assignments as directed.

What you’ll bring to the table:

To be successful in Howe’s T.E.K. apprenticeship, you’ll need to be mechanically inclined and able to follow directions closely. Good communication skills are key, as well as the ability to work unsupervised, and maintain a professional appearance always. Apprentices are also expected to drive to and from job sites as necessary so reliable transportation is a must.

How you’ll qualify:

Howe’s T.E.K. apprenticeship provides all the on-the-job and classroom training necessary to qualify you to become a licensed tradesperson. No prior construction experience is required, but it is helpful. Apprentices must also demonstrate basic skills and knowledge of the trade, as well as a good understanding of materials and tools used in the industry. A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

*Third and Fourth year apprentices must have a basic understanding of NFPA code.

What to expect in the field:

Working in the fire sprinkler industry can be physically demanding. As a Fire Protection Apprentice, you must have the physical strength to lift/carry/push/pull up to 50lbs, and have the balance, hand-eye coordination, and stamina necessary to complete jobs in various areas. Apprentices must also be able to work at height, on ladders or lifts, and in all weather conditions for prolonged periods of time. If offered a position with the company, you will be required to undergo and pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical, and background check.
