In 1997, they started their career as the owner of Paint Island Canoe & Kayak, a retail outlet specializing in canoes, kayaks, trips, training, and boat building classes. Ron held this position until 2006.

Ron Friedman attended Adams State University from 1970 to 1972, where they studied Business and English. Ron then transferred to the University of Montana and completed a BA in Literature and Anthropology from 1973 to 1975.
