Clemens Fuest has extensive work experience in economics and research. Clemens served as the President of the ifo Institute - Leibniz Institute for Economic Research since 2016. Prior to that, they were a Professor of Volkswirtschaftslehre at the University of Mannheim from 2013 to 2016. Clemens also held the position of President and Scientific Director at the Zentrum für Europäische Wirtschaftsforschung (ZEW) during the same period. Clemens Fuest was a Professor of Business Taxation at the University of Oxford from 2008 to 2013, and they were a Professor of Wirtschaftliche Staatswissenschaften at the University of Cologne from 2001 to 2008. Before that, they worked as a Research Assistant at both the Ludwig-Maximilians Universität München and the University of Cologne.
Clemens Fuest obtained their Abitur from Gymnasium Antonianum Geseke in an unspecified year before 1987. Clemens then pursued their undergraduate studies in Wirtschaftswissenschaften at Ruhr University Bochum from 1987 to 1989. After that, they attended the University of Mannheim, where they completed their Diplom-Volkswirt degree in Angewandte Volkswirtschaftslehre from 1989 to 1991. Subsequently, from 1991 to 1994, Fuest undertook a Promotionsstudium in Angewandte Volkswirtschaftslehre at the University of Cologne and earned their Dr.rer.pol. degree with summa cum laude honors. Finally, Fuest completed their education with a Habilitation, venia legendi in Angewandte Volkswirtschaftslehre at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, finishing sometime before 2000.

“Shaping the Economic Debate”: The ifo Institute wants to help shape the economic policy debate in Germany and Europe. We can do this because we combine excellent research with economic policy relevance. Our research findings provide policymakers and business leaders with a basis for making informed decisions. We prepare economic findings in such a way that the media and the public can understand and classify current economic and political events. The people at the ifo Institute, its supporters, and its committees make it possible to fulfill our mission. Our close cooperation with Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) in Munich is an important basis for our success. Research at ifo combines academic excellence with economic policy relevance. Five fields of action form the basis for this bridge building: research, policy advice, information and services, participation in public debates, and development of junior economists. In all these areas we aim to achieve excellence. Our five fields of action are closely interlinked: research is the basis for policy advice. And we can participate in public debates on the basis of newly gained knowledge. Young economists make a significant contribution to achieving excellent research results. The development of junior economists is particularly important to us. The ifo Institute’s activities in the area of information and services in turn ensure that our findings reach the various stakeholder groups: through events, media work, or publications.
