Joel S. Marcus

Joel S. Marcus, JD, CPA, is Executive Chairman and Founder of Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Inc. (NYSE:ARE) and Alexandria Venture Investments, which has been recognized by Silicon Valley Bank as the #1 most active corporate venture capital investor in biopharma. Prior to April 2018, Joel served as the Alexandria Real Estate Equities’ Chairman, Chief Executive Officer, and President. Since co-founding the company as a startup with $19 million in Series A capital, he has led the growth of Alexandria into an S&P 500® company that as of June 30, 2022, has a total equity capitalization of $23.4 billion, ranking it in the top 10% among all publicly traded U.S. REITs by equity capitalization.

Joel founded Alexandria Venture Investments, the company’s strategic venture capital platform, to invest in disruptive life science, agrifoodtech, climate innovation, and technology companies that are advancing transformative new modalities and platforms that improve human health. He currently serves on the boards of directors of Applied Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ: APLT), Frequency Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ: FREQ), and Intra-Cellular Therapies, Inc. (NASDAQ: ITCI). He was named one of Real Estate Forum’s2017 Best Bosses in commercial real estate and was previously a recipient of the EY Entrepreneur of The Year Award (Los Angeles).
