Alejandro Barcena

Researcher (urban Risk), Human Settlements Research Group at International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED)

Alejandro Barcena is a proficient Risk and Resilience Researcher at the International Institute for Environment and Development since January 2023, focusing on climate impact assessments and the development of predictive models utilizing machine learning. Prior to this role, Alejandro was a co-investigator at King's College London, where leadership of the Climate Risk Group emphasized urban climate risk research and governance. Experience also includes serving as a Public Policy Advisor for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, chairing a consortium addressing climate risk and resilience, and as Country Director for the Spanish Red Cross, managing a substantial staff and budget. Earlier in their career, Alejandro held the position of Satellite Design Manager at Airbus, handling technical specifications and negotiations for satellite payloads. Alejandro holds a PhD in Human Geography from King's College London, an MSc in Development Studies from Universidad Complutense de Madrid, and a M.ENG. in Telecommunication Engineering from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid.
