Megan Hansen

Machine Learning Scientist at Impact Observatory

Megan Hansen has a diverse work experience, starting with their current role as a Machine Learning Scientist at Impact Observatory since 2021. Prior to that, they worked at Maxar Technologies from 2019 to 2021, where they served as a Data Scientist on the Analytics Engineering team. Their responsibilities involved developing deep learning models for various image conditions and regions, as well as creating an end-to-end machine learning pipeline to enhance model development efficiency.

Before joining Maxar Technologies, Megan worked as a Data Science Intern at the same company in 2019. During their internship, they focused on developing machine learning models for ship detection in satellite imagery. Additionally, they provided support to the engineering team by testing and recommending analytical tools that aligned with the data science workflows and added value to Maxar's customers.

In 2017, Megan gained valuable experience as a Physical Science Intern at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Geologic Hazards Science Center. Megan actively contributed to multiple projects, including developing Python scripts for detecting landslides in seismic signals, tabulating and analyzing large datasets from a debris flow site, creating visualizations to determine landslide characteristics and frequency, and utilizing satellite images to generate informative maps and descriptions for public reference. Prior to this, they also worked on the Tweet Earthquake Dispatch (TED) application, which involved detecting earthquakes from Twitter feeds and sending alerts to a global audience.

Starting their career, Megan worked as a Student Employee at the Colorado School of Mines Alumni Association from 2014 to 2017.

Overall, Megan's work experience showcases their expertise in machine learning, data science, and geoscience research, highlighting their ability to deliver analytical solutions and contribute to impactful projects.

Megan Hansen holds a Master's degree in Hydrologic Science and Engineering, which they obtained from the Colorado School of Mines in 2019. Prior to their postgraduate studies, they earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Geophysical Engineering from the same institution between 2014 and 2018. Additionally, Megan pursued a McBride Honors Minor in Public Affairs at the Colorado School of Mines, although specific start and end dates for this program are not provided.

In terms of additional certifications, Megan Hansen has completed the following courses: Convolutional Neural Networks Course Certificate from Coursera in December 2021, Neural Networks and Deep Learning Course Certificate from Coursera in March 2020, and Data Science A-Z from Udemy in January 2019.
