Denise Johnson has had extensive work experience in the field of providing services for individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing, or deaf-blind. Denise started their career in 1994 at the Wisconsin School for the Deaf, where they worked as a Teacher Assistant until 1996. From 1996 to 2002, Denise worked as a Child Care Counselor at the same institution. In 2002, they joined IndependenceFirst and took on the role of Wisconsin Statewide Project Coordinator for Substance Use Disorder and Mental Health Services for People who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, or Deaf-Blind. In this role, Denise delivered presentations and provided support and prevention services related to alcohol and drug abuse, mental health, and bullying for individuals of all ages in Wisconsin.

Denise Johnson pursued their education at several institutions over the years. In 1994, they enrolled at Milwaukee Area Technical College, completing their studies and receiving an Associate's degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences/Liberal Studies in 1996. Following this, Denise attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee from 2008 to 2012, where they achieved a Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.Sc.) degree in Social Work.
