Indiana CTSI
Kara Garcia is an accomplished academic and researcher with extensive experience in biomedical engineering and neuroscience. Currently serving as an Assistant Research Professor at Indiana University School of Medicine since July 2018, Kara Garcia focuses on cortical expansion during brain development and degeneration, employing advanced techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging and finite element modeling. In conjunction, Kara Garcia acts as an Evansville Navigator for Indiana CTSI, fostering clinical and translational research collaborations in Southwest Indiana. Previous roles include Assistant Professor at the University of Southern Indiana and Graduate Research Assistant at Washington University in St. Louis, where Kara Garcia engaged in research on brain morphogenesis and cortical growth. Educational qualifications include a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering and a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis, along with a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering from Purdue University.

Indiana CTSI
The Indiana CTSI brings together the state’s brightest minds to solve Indiana’s most pressing health challenges through research. It is a statewide research partnership among Indiana University, Purdue University, the University of Notre Dame and numerous life sciences businesses, government entities and community organizations. The Indiana CTSI engages with the public at every level of research, from basic science to patient care. The institute has been continuously funded by multimillion dollar grants from the National Institutes of Health since 2008 and is housed at the IU School of Medicine.
