Michael then obtained a Bachelor's degree in Psychology with a minor in Biology from Southern Methodist University between 1989 and 1993. In 1997 and 1998, they earned a Master's degree in Public Health from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston). Michael also holds an MPH certification.
