Kendra Norrell is a seasoned professional in program management and community outreach, currently serving as Senior Program Officer at the Institute for Sustainable Communities since August 2021. In this role, Kendra leads various initiatives including the Partnership for Resilient Communities and provides comprehensive partner management, event design, and communication strategies. Previously, Kendra held roles such as Community Outreach Coordinator for the City of Richmond, where equitable planning and climate action engagement were key focuses, and Alternative Transportation Coordinator at Virginia Commonwealth University, where Kendra developed programs to promote sustainable commuting. Kendra’s extensive experience includes program management at GRTC Transit System and Groundwork RVA, as well as educational roles at the Science Museum of Virginia and Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. Kendra holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Haverford College and a Master of Urban and Regional Planning with a focus on Environmental Planning from Virginia Commonwealth University.

The Institute for Sustainable Communities facilitates transformative community-driven climate change mitigation projects in the United States, India, China, Bangladesh, and Southeast Asia that address systemic inequalities, extractive capitalism, and the persistent international reliance on fossil fuels which benefit the few at a grave cost to marginalized population groups, workers, public health, and our environment. We address the root causes of climate change impacts by building community knowledge and skills, strengthening governance, and diversifying the field of sustainability professionals. Our approach incorporates capacity building, technical assistance delivery, knowledge products, climate change action planning, and peer learning.
