Sara Carnegie has a diverse work experience in various legal positions. Sara began their career as a self-employed barrister at Chambers from 1998 to 2001. Sara then worked as a senior lawyer at the Revenue & Customs prosecutions office from 2001 to 2008. From 2009 to 2011, they served as a solicitor to the Baha Mousa Inquiry, followed by a role as solicitor to the Detainee Inquiry from 2011 to 2012. Sara then joined the Judicial Office in 2012 as a legal adviser to the Senior Presiding Judge, providing legal advice and working on various projects. From 2015 to 2018, they were the Director of strategic policy at the Crown Prosecution Service. In 2019, they became the Legal Director of the International Bar Association, and as of 2021, they serve as a Board Trustee at Under One Sky.

Sara Carnegie began their education in 1986 at the School of St. Helens and St Katherine's in Abingdon, UK, where they studied without pursuing a specific degree or field of study. Sara then attended the University of Birmingham from 1993 to 1997, where they studied Law with French. In 1995 to 1996, Sara also spent a year at the Université de Limoges, focusing on the study of French legal systems. Following their undergraduate studies, Sara enrolled at the College of Law in London from 1997 to 1998, completing the Bar Vocational Course in Law.
