Omar S Mahmood is a seasoned political and security analyst specializing in conflict resolution and regional security issues, particularly in Africa. Currently serving as a Senior Analyst at the International Crisis Group since January 2020, Omar conducts in-depth research and writes policy reports focused on Somalia. Prior to this role, Omar was a Senior Researcher at the Institute for Security Studies, investigating security challenges in the Horn of Africa and Lake Chad Basin. Experience also includes serving as a self-employed Africa Analyst and Research Consultant, providing analytical reports and field research on the Lake Chad Basin and Horn of Africa regions. Previous positions include Associate Senior Analyst at Navanti Group and advocacy roles at International Crisis Group and Management Systems International, along with diverse teaching and community development experiences through the Peace Corps. Omar holds a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy from The Fletcher School at Tufts University and a Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Affairs and Economics from the University of Virginia.
