Francisco J. Bonilla-Escobar, MD MSc PhD is a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Washington since September 2023 and serves as the Editor in Chief for the International Journal of Medical Students. With extensive experience in clinical research, Bonilla-Escobar was a PhD student in the Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Program at the University of Pittsburgh from December 2016 to May 2024, contributing to program analysis and providing academic advice. Previously, as Program Coordinator, Bonilla-Escobar established foundational principles for a Teleophthalmology Program. Bonilla-Escobar's academic background includes a PhD in Clinical Research and Translational Science from the University of Pittsburgh, a Master of Science in Epidemiology from Universidad del Valle, and a Doctor of Medicine from the same institution. Additional roles include founding SCISCO Foundation, working as an Associate Research Fellow, and serving as an Emergency Physician.

The International Journal of Medical Students (IJMS) is an online peer-reviewed open-access scientific journal (ISSN 2076-6327), created to share the scientific production and experiences of medical students worldwide. Our objective is to be the primary diffusion organ for medical students, using standards that accredit the process of scientific publication. The impact factor for the IJMS is 5.62 according to the Index Copernicus (ICV 2012), 3.034 according to the Scientific Journal Impact Factor (SJIF), 1.212 according to the International Impact Factor Services, and 40.16 according to InfoBase Index. This makes the IJMS the number one ranked journal for medical students.
