Boyd Norton has had a long career in conservation and photography. In 1969, they founded Boyd Norton Photography and has authored and photographed 17 books and hundreds of magazine articles. Boyd has also produced several promotional videos for eco-tourism companies in Peru, Tanzania, and Alaska. In 1990, they co-founded Baikal Watch, a project of Earth Island Institute, to protect Siberia's Lake Baikal as a World Heritage Site. In 1993, they served as a past trustee for the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. In 2005, they were a charter fellow for the International League of Conservation Photographers, and in 2008 they founded NANPA. In 2010, they co-founded and co-directed Serengeti Watch, a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization for the long-term protection of the Serengeti ecosystem. Prior to this, they were the group leader and technical director of Reactor Safety Studies, and in 1962 they operated the controls of SPERT I reactor and allowed it to blow itself apart.
Boyd Norton obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from Michigan Technological University between 1955 and 1960.
