Karen Vella-Smith has been in the IT industry since 1986. Karen began their career as a Customer Support Consultant at Digital Equipment Corporation, followed by a role as a Test Process Analyst at MITTS - Government of Malta in 1995. In 1997, they held two positions simultaneously, as a Network Engineer at Sequoia and a PC Support Technician at Sony Electronics. Karen then moved on to Apollo Information Services, Inc. in 2001, where they were an IT Manager. In 2005, Karen became an IT Technician at KB Home, and in 2006 they were an IT Manager/Senior Systems Administrator at Interop Technologies.

Karen Vella-Smith attended St. Alphonsus High School from 1978 to 1981, Wayne State University from 1986 to 1987, and Lawrence Technological University from 1987 to 1990. In 1999, they obtained a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) certification from Microsoft Corporation.
