John Hannegan has a strong background in physics and research, with experience in both academic and industry settings. John currently holds the role of Senior Physicist, Research and Development at IonQ. Prior to joining IonQ, John worked at the University of Maryland as a Graduate Research Assistant, where they were responsible for designing, constructing, and operating an ion trap quantum networking node. John also gained experience in optical systems design and alignment, as well as single photon collection. John's earlier work experience includes a role as an Undergraduate Research Assistant at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, where they focused on the fabrication and characterization of nonlinear optical polymers for use in THz spectroscopy. Throughout their career, John has developed expertise in lasers, laser systems, and spectroscopy techniques.
John Hannegan completed their Bachelor of Science degree in Physics and Mathematics at the University of Maryland Baltimore County from 2012 to 2016. John then pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Physics at the University of Maryland from 2016 to 2022.
