Juliana Mejia Franco has a diverse work experience in the field of water and wastewater management. Juliana began their career as a Teacher Assistant and Laboratory Assistant at the Universidad de Los Andes, where they also worked as a Research Assistant, focusing on water quality modeling and assisting in the organization of Continuing Education courses.
Juliana then served as a Junior Designer at Construedificar LTDA, where they were responsible for data collection and analysis, and the preparation of technical reports for municipal engineering projects. Juliana also worked as a Design Consultant at Clearford Water Systems, where they generated design recommendations for constructed wetland systems for wastewater treatment and wrote guidance manuals for system construction and maintenance.
Later, they joined the University of Ottawa as a Graduate Research Assistant, studying agricultural wastewater treatment systems and supervising undergraduate co-op students. Juliana also served as a Teacher Assistant, assisting in various courses.
Juliana further expanded their experience by working as a Water Quality Monitor at Village Vacances Valcartier - Calypso Theme Waterpark, where they conducted water quality analyses and generated reports on the water quality of aquatic attractions.
In the field of research, Juliana worked as a Researcher at Environment and Climate Change Canada & University of Ottawa, developing fact sheets on wastewater treatment technologies for small communities. Juliana also worked as a Senior Client Manager and Client Manager at SENTRY, a company specializing in real-time microbial performance monitoring in wastewater treatment systems.
Juliana's expertise in water and wastewater management is further demonstrated by their role as a Professor at Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology, where they taught various courses related to water/wastewater treatment, environmental engineering, and biodiversity.
Throughout their work experience, Juliana has demonstrated a strong understanding of environmental sampling, laboratory procedures, and standard operating procedures for different applications in water and wastewater management.
Juliana Mejia Franco completed their Master's degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of Ottawa, which they attended from 2016 to 2018. Prior to this, they graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering (Magna Cum Laude) from Universidad de Los Andes, where they pursued Complementary Studies in Biology from 2012 to 2015. In terms of additional certifications, Juliana obtained the WEF Aeration Design and Optimization Short Course from the Water Environment Federation in October 2022. Moreover, in June 2018, they received the OWWCO OIT license in Water/Wastewater Treatment, Collection, and Distribution from the Ontario Water Wastewater Certification Office.
