Jose Mejia has a diverse work experience in the field of psychiatry and forensic psychiatry. Jose has held various roles and positions at different organizations.
From 1993 to 1994, they worked as an Attending Psychiatrist at Centro Federal de Readaptacion Social del Altiplano and Instituto Nacional de la Nutricion Salvador Zubiran in Mexico.
In 2005, Jose joined Western University as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) and later became an Associate Professor until 2014.
During their time at Western University, they also served as the Head of Division of Forensic Psychiatry at St. Joseph's Health Care London. In this role, they developed the division, organized lectures and joint presentations, taught residents, recruited clinical scientists, and established collaboration networks.
In 2007, Jose worked as an Attending Psychiatrist at the Children and Parents Resource Institute until 2014.
In 2014, they joined Dalhousie University & IWK Health as an Associate Professor in Psychiatry, where they provide training and disseminates knowledge to graduate students in various disciplines. Jose also has a significant involvement with the Nova Scotia Psychiatric Association. Jose served as the President elect from 2015 to 2019 and the President of the association.
At the IWK Health Centre, Jose held the roles of President of Nova Scotia Psychiatric Association and Physician lead for the child and adolescent forensic program. In these positions, they collaborated with colleagues to improve services, optimize resource utilization, and disseminate expertise.

Jose Mejia holds a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Human Genetics from McGill University (1994-2001), a Certificate in Mental Health Law from York University - Osgoode Hall Law School (2014), a Fellowship in Forensic Psychiatry from Queen's University (1999-2000), a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (1990-1994), and a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.B.S.) degree from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (1982-1990). Additionally, they obtained a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree in Health Law from York University - Osgoode Hall Law School in 2015. Jose Mejia also holds various certifications including Academic License from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (2014), Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (2010), Academic License from The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (2005), Restricted License from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (2001), Restricted license from Collège des médecins du Québec (2000), and Educational License from The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (1999).
