Tamara Ellis-Meriwether has over 20 years of experience in various roles related to special education and counseling. Tamara began their career as a Mental Health Technician at Mississippi State Hospital in 1998. From 1999 to 2004, Tamara worked as a Youth Services Counselor at the Mississippi Department of Human Services. In 2006, they became a Special Education Coordinator at the same department, where they managed the special education referral process and ensured the appropriate placement and development of individual education plans for students. In 2013, Tamara joined the Jackson Public School District as a Program Specialist/Case Manager, where they maintained knowledge of special education laws, established relationships with stakeholders, and implemented policies. In 2015, they were promoted to the role of Director (EES-Middle School Division), where they provided guidance, professional development, and ensured compliance with district and state requirements.

Tamara Ellis-Meriwether obtained a Master's Degree in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling/Counselor from Jackson State University, which they completed between 1997 and 1999. Tamara then pursued an Ed.S. (Education Specialist) in Educational Leadership, which they earned from Jackson State University from 2005 to 2007. Tamara further expanded their education by obtaining a Doctorate (Ph.D) in Educational Administration & Supervision from Jackson State University, completing it from 2007 to 2014.
