Lawrence Nicolas has a diverse work experience in the animal welfare industry. Lawrence is currently serving as the President of the Jacksonville Humane Society since July 2023. Prior to this, they worked as the Chief Operating Officer at the same organization from June 2021 to July 2023. Before joining the Jacksonville Humane Society, Lawrence was the Chief Operating Officer at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League from September 2019 to June 2021. Lawrence also held various positions at Best Friends Animal Society, including Senior Manager of Lifesaving, Regional Engagement Manager, Manager of Adoptions and Animal Care, and Shelter Outreach Coordinator, from 2012 to 2019. Lawrence started their career at Dumb Friends League, where they worked as a Customer Care Supervisor and Customer Care Technician from 2008 to 2012.
Lawrence Nicolas attended the University of Colorado Denver from 2004 to 2008, where they obtained a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Communication, General. In 2021, they also received the Best Friends Executive Leadership Certification from Southern Utah University.

Founded in 1885, the Jacksonville Humane Society is a local, independent non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. JHS provides care, comfort and compassion to animals in need while engaging hearts, hands and minds of our community to bring about an end to the killing of abandoned and orphaned shelter animals. JHS is proud to partner with local agencies to keep Jacksonville a no kill city. In 2022, JHS provided almost 9,000 homeless pets with shelter and medical care as they waited to find loving homes. The Jacksonville Humane Society's Adoption, Education and Pet Help Center is open 7 days a week for adoption. We also offer help for pet owners in need, children's education camps, military veteran training, business partnerships, volunteer opportunities and more!
