Richard Brecht has a diverse work experience in the field of language education and interpretation. Richard is a Co-Founder, Chief Language Officer, and Member of the Board of Advisors at Jeenie, a mobile platform that provides on-demand language assistance through video and audio calls with live interpreters. Prior to this, they held the position of Professor Emeritus at the University of Maryland and was also the Co-Director of the American Councils Research Center. Richard served as the Executive Director of the University of Maryland Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL) and Chairman of the Board at the American Councils for International Education. Additionally, they served as the Director of the National Foreign Language Center at Johns Hopkins University SAIS & University of Maryland. Richard started their career as the Executive Director of the National Council of Organizations of Less Commonly Taught Languages.
Richard Brecht earned a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Russian Language and Literature from Penn State University between the years 1963 and 1965. Richard then pursued further education at Harvard University, where they obtained a Master's degree in Slavic Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics, General, from 1965 to 1970. Following this, Richard Brecht continued their studies at Harvard University and completed their Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Slavic Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics, General, between 1965 and 1972.
