Jason Hsieh

Senior System Safety And System Engineer at Joby Aviation

Jason Hsieh has a diverse work experience spanning multiple companies and roles. Jason started their career as a Graduate Research Assistant at Cornell University, where they created tutorials and provided guidance on ANSYS simulation for MAE courses.

After their time at Cornell, Jason joined SpaceX as a Propulsion Analyst Intern, working on the development of rocket engines such as Merlin 1D, Merlin VacD, and Raptor. Jason played a key role in the flight qualification and certification of various engine components, as well as developing a thermal-mechanical engine global model. Jason also conducted fatigue and fracture analysis to establish non-destructive testing criteria for casting, welds, and 3D printed parts.

Following SpaceX, Jason worked as a Senior Mechanical Engineer at SSL, contributing their expertise in mechanical engineering. Jason then moved on to SERES EV, where they held the position of Senior Mechanical Engineer - Thermal System, responsible for the design, specification, and validation of the E-powertrain. Jason also conducted failure investigations, root cause validation, and implemented mitigation strategies for the EV thermal system and drive unit.

Currently, Jason is employed at Joby Aviation as a Senior System Safety and System Engineer. In this role, they have generated electric propulsion design requirements and safety requirements through stakeholder elicitation and interpretation of FAA regulations. Jason has also authored various assessments and analyses, including Functional Hazard Assessment, Fault Tree Analysis, Common Cause Analysis, and FMEA for flight controls and electric propulsion systems.

Overall, Jason Hsieh has demonstrated a strong background in mechanical engineering, with a particular focus on propulsion systems and thermal systems for electric vehicles.

Jason Hsieh completed their Bachelor of Science (BS) in Mechanical Engineering at Rutgers University from 2007 to 2011. Jason then pursued a Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) in Mechanical Engineering at Cornell University in 2012.
