JPI Oceans
Thorsten Kiefer is an accomplished professional in the field of environmental science and paleoceanography, currently serving as the Executive Director of JPI Oceans since March 2019. Kiefer has a diverse background in leadership and consultancy, having previously worked as a Consultant for PAGES Past Global Changes from September 2018 to February 2019, and as the Global Hub Director for Future Earth from September 2015 to August 2018. Prior to these roles, Kiefer was the Executive Director of PAGES Past Global Changes from April 2005 to August 2015, and held postdoctoral research associate positions at the University of Cambridge and the University of Kiel between 1998 and 2005. Kiefer's educational qualifications include a PhD in Paleoceanography from Kiel University and a Diploma in Geology/Earth Science from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.

JPI Oceans is a strategic platform which provides a long-term approach to marine and maritime research and technology development in Europe. In its role as a coordination platform, JPI Oceans will focus on making better and more efficient use of national research budgets, which represent 88% of the research funding within Europe. JPI Oceans consists of 15 member countries, with a further five countries currently pending status decision.
